Near the city center of Wassenaar is an amusement park called Duinrell, which attracts thousands of people from all around Europe every year. We had lived in Wassenaar for over 3 years and had never gone as a family, so this trip was long overdue. Even though we lived less than 3 miles away, we decided to rent a cabin, also called a “Duingalow” on the grounds so we could get the full vacation experience. We invited some family friends to join; the Hendersons and Curtises actually stayed with us at Duinrell for the week, and many of our other friends joined us for an afternoon or two. At Duinrell you can either rent cabins or camping grounds, and one night it was raining so hard that our friends who were camping had to come inside the cabin for the night because there was literally a river running through their tents. So, we improvised with towels for blankets, and couches and floors for beds. We love Holland weather!!! …sort of. While the weather was rainy for much of the time we were there, we also enjoyed some rare sunny, beautiful days. One of the primary attractions at Duinrell is the adjacent indoor waterpark, called Tikibad. There are dozens of slides, and as far as indoor waterparks go, Tikibad was pretty awesome. We spent 2 full days there. Duinrell itself also had its fair share of both cool rollercoasters and unique rides, for example the “Katapult”, where you sit in a cart/boat at the top of a ramp, and then the boat slides down the ramp and goes over a small jump, causing you and the boat to “leap” across the water. A perk of being in the Duingalows was that after the park closed to others, the rides all closed, but there were playgrounds that had neither gates nor guards. So those were readily available for us to make use of well into the night. Another thing we enjoyed at Duinrell was the lookout point; although much of Holland is below sea level, Duinrell is located on a slight hill, and there was a tower that provided a beautiful view of the surrounding area from the top. While we did spend a lot of time at the parks, a huge amount of our time was spent (true to Schaumann form) playing card games and board games inside the cabin. We played Mafia, Spades, Settlers, Presidents, Telestrations, Axis & Allies, and Spoons late into the evening nearly every day. Overall, while it may not have been the most exotic vacation, it was still definitely one to remember, and one made so much more fun by being with friends.
