I lived in Italy for 2 years during college as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Tera and I had also visited Italy together during college, with Tera’s family. I love going back to Italy, with an ability to speak the language, I feel very at home there. As a family, we took three wonderful trips to Italy. The first was with the whole family, to North Italy, stopping in Milan, Venice, Florence and Pisa. The 2nd trip was just Tera and I to watch Tyler sing in the AMIS Honor choir in Rome. We spent a weekend visiting the ancient city. The third and final trip we took with just the five kids was to Sicily, and we went volcano hunting in Stromboli, and saw shooting lava for the very first time . . . in a word - AWESOME! Highlights: #1 - Losing oneself in the backstreets of Venice #2 - Seeing Michelangelo’s David in Florence #3 - Visiting my old mission neighborhood in east Rome, where I lived as a missionary 25 years ago #4 - Climbing Stromboli Volcano at dusk to watch lava erupting from the crater #5 - Visiting the catacombs of Palermo, the most grotesque zombie crypt corpse experiences we’ve ever had #6 - Visiting St. Peter’s Basilica, with the ‘Pieta’ by Michelangelo, and the incredible cathedral. I have been there many, many times, and it never fails to impress.
