Tera and I took a business trip to Oslo, Norway one winter, and later took a weekend trip with Tera’s parents. We flew into Bergen, and took the “Norway in a Nutshell” tour, which included bus, train and ferry trips to the Voss Railway, and Flam Railway, and incredible fjord boat trip. It is truly a beautiful country. I also visited Norway on a family history trip, meeting a great uncle, and seeing an island which I am part owner of, in the harbor of Farsund. Highlights: #1 - Bergen waterfront - This was a charming old wooden waterfront, that I wish we could have spent more time wandering through. #2 - Flam Railway - This is one of the memorable railway trips in the world, cutting up the canyon through tunnels and the steepest of rail routes, past waterfalls and overlooking the beautiful valley and fjord #3 - Fjord Ferry trip from Gudvangen to Flam through the Aurlandfjord - Such incredibly steep cliffs, high waterfalls, isolated farmhouses, quite a ride. #4 - Overnight in Vatnahalsen - This single hotel on the Flam Railway was a gem of a find, isolated, and surrounded by beautiful mountains and lakes. We took a beautiful afternoon hike to the waterall, over spongy mossy alpine wetland fields. #5 - Bike ride around Vangavet lake in Voss - we were used to Netherlands bike riding, which is FLAT!! They told us this bike ride was a flat ride, but their definition of flat is much different than ours, because the hills felt pretty steep to us.
