#2 - Winter Hiking and Sledding and Snowshowing and Skiing in Utah

1/15/2023

The winter of 2023 brought an enormous amount of snow to the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains, and we were joyful participants.  We did at least 3 hikes with sleds, and Tera went snowshowing with her hiking buddies, and we skied both at Sundance and Powder Mountain (for the first time).

Highlights:
  • Incredible Skiing at Sundance
  • Skiing at Powder Mountain with Nikki and Rodrigo
  • Hiking and Sledding in Rock Canyon with Martins and Nikki and Rodrigo
Highlights:
  • Incredible Skiing at Sundance – We did not get season ski passes this year, but we promised the kids at least 3 days of skiing.  The two days at Sundance were incredible.  There was so much snow on the mountain, that runs were open which I had never seen open before.  Runs down all the Pipeline Gullies were open, and even the Warren Miller run was open, which I took, and fell and slid down on my face about the last 1/3.  One can only hope for more such years.
  • Skiing at Powder Mountain with Nikki and Rodrigo – Our cruising friends came down for a weekend, and we met them at Powder Mountain.  It was quite a drive from Orem, but worth it for a day. Since the skiing was amazing.  They have so incredibly much open space for skiing, that one of the lifts doesn’t even open onto runs, as much as it opens onto the entire mountain, and you just pick a line on one side or the other and head to the bottom.  The top of the mountain was rather cloudy, so we stayed on the lower side, and had a wonderful time.
  • Hiking and Sledding in Rock Canyon with Martins and Nikki and Rodrigo – Tera and Jill and I took a up an American Fork Canyon and sledded back down to the bottom.  Then we did it again with the kids in Rock Canyon, and had such a great time that we invited Monica and Ori and Nikki and Rodrigo to join us.  We met Nikki and Rodrigo on our cruise to South Africa. they are a pair of awesome travel bloggers (outofyourcomfortzone.net). Monica was a good deal hesitant, because she doesn’t like the cold.  But we had an awesome time, with great sledding back down the trail.  A total do-again activity next year if the snow is good.
